Batman v Superman Drops to $15.4 Million on Friday

Warner Bros. Pictures Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earned $15.4 million domestically from 4,256 theaters its second Friday to take its total to $224.4 million so far. The film earned $81.6 million last Friday, but that included the Thursday previews figure of $27.7 million (studios these days add the Thursday previews number to the Friday total). Even if you take that number out, however, you’re still looking at a drop of more than 70% for the respective Fridays ($53.9 million v $15.4 million). It’s expected the Zack Snyder-directed comic book movie will gross about $50 million this weekend, compared to its $166.1 million first weekend in North America.

Having said that, it’s important to remember that some other big blockbusters had big second weekend drop offs and still did just fine. Examples include Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘s 72% drop and The Twilight Saga: New Moon‘s 70% drop.

Internationally, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice added $19.2 million on Friday for an overseas total of $363.4 million and a worldwide total of $587.8 million so far.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cost $250 million to make before marketing and earned a B CinemaScore from audiences last weekend. The film stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane returning from Man of Steel, joined by Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch, as well as Scoot McNairy, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto.

In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante, fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
