The BBC has released a special first look video at the upcoming 2016 Doctor Who Christmas Special which you can check out in the player below. Titled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” which is perhaps a play on the Spanish translation of the show’s title, the episode will feature The Doctor joining forces with an investigative journalist, played by Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall, The Player) and a superhero to save New York from a deadly alien threat. Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black, War of the Worlds) plays Grant, and the masked hero, in the special.
“I’ve always loved superheroes and this Christmas Doctor Who dives into that world,” Steven Moffat teased. “My favourite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent.”
Matt Lucas (Nardole) will also star along with Adetomiwa Edun (Lucifer, Bates Motel), Aleksandar Jovanovic and Logan Hoffman.
The 60-minute Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on BBC One and is written by Steven Moffat, Executive Produced by Brian Minchin, Produced by Peter Bennett and Directed by Ed Bazalgette (Poldark).
Doctor Who, which began broadcasting on BBC America in 2005, follows the Doctor, an alien from a race called the Time Lords whose home planet is Gallifrey is created by Sydney Newman (The Avengers), and Executive Produced by Russell T. Davies (Torchwood), Julie Gardner (Torchwood), Steven Moffat (Sherlock), Phil Collinson (Coronation Street), Piers Wenger (How I Live Now), Beth Willis (Doctor Who Confidential), Brian Minchin (Wizards vs. Aliens), Caroline Skinner (Our Girl), and Mal Young (Desperate Scousewives).
