The CW is expanding the Archie universe following the success of Riverdale Season 1! The network, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television are developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as a one-hour drama.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the adaptation, which could potentially debut in the 2018-19 season. Lee Toland Krieger would direct and executive produce with Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater.
Melissa Joan Hart previously played the character in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which ran for four seasons on ABC and then moved to The WB its final three seasons. The comedy ended its run in 2003.
KJ Apa stars as Archie Andrews in Riverdale along with Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones and Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom. Riverdale hails from Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, in association with Berlanti Productions, with executive producers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater. Riverdale Season 2 premieres October 11 at 8/7c on The CW.
