The final season of Game of Thrones will wrap up in May, but audiences certainly haven’t seen the last of Westeros. HBO is planning a prequel series with showrunner Jane Goldman and A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin. Now, HBO’s programming president, Casey Bloys, has revealed when filming will start.
According to Bloys (via Entertainment Weekly), the new series will officially get underway early this summer. If the show gets picked up (as expected), the network plans to air the first season in either 2020 or 2021. Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse were cast as the series’ unnamed leads back in October. Last month, they were joined by a full cast that includes Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.

The Game of Thrones prequel other than that it takes place thousands of years before the flagship series. Martin has said that Westeros is going to look a lot different on this show, as none of the families introduced in the main series have risen to prominence yet. Martin has expressed his desire for the series to be called The Long Night. But apparently he and HBO don’t see eye to eye on this. Martin will executive produce the series alongside Goldman, Vince Gerardis, and Daniel Zelman. S.J. Clarkson, a veteran of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Defenders, is directing the pilot episode.
Game of Thrones’ eighth season will premiere on April 14. Are you excited for the prequel series to start filming this summer? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
