Hellboyâs 25th anniversary was the perfect time for Mike Mignolaâs pulp superhero to return to the big screen. Unfortunately, last monthâs reboot arrived with little more than a whimper. Poor reviews and underwhelming box office figures bogged down its release. Additionally, there were reports of alleged infighting between director Neil Marshall and two producers during filming. Now that he doesnât have to promote it, David Harbour is offering his own thoughts on the movieâs performance.
While speaking with Digital Spy, Harbour admitted his personal disappointment in the finished film. Moreover, he seemed to confirm that the movie suffered due to creative differences between the filmmakers.
âWe did our best, but thereâs so many voices that go into these things and theyâre not always going to work out,â said Harbour. âI did what I could do and I feel proud of what I did, but ultimately Iâm not in control of a lot of those things.â

Harbour will also appear in Marvelâs Black Widow, so Hellboy wonât be his final appearance within the comic book movie realm. Surprisingly, Harbour suggested that Marvelâs virtual monopoly on superhero movies didnât help Hellboyâs lackluster box office.
âThe problem that I have with comic book movies nowadays is that I think, and itâs a result of the power of Marvel stuff, itâs like chocolate, itâs a flavour,â explained Harbour. âSo everybody goes chocolate is delicious and these guys make the best chocolate. So as you judge the movies, itâs like, âWell itâs not as chocolatey as this, this does not taste like chocolate at allâ. And I sort of want a world where thereâs more flavours than just comparisons to chocolate. So in that way when Hellboy is viewed on the chocolate spectrum, it does very poorly. That being said, it also has major problems.â
Regardless, Harbour still thinks anyone who hasnât seen Hellboy should still give it a chance.
âI think as a rental or as a movie that you see on an aeroplane, I think youâd be like, âOh that was funâ because itâs a fun movie, and I think it was unfairly bludgeoned as a result of these comparisons,â added Harbour.
