When McFarlane Toys initially began a foray into LEGO-style construction toys, their Walking Dead and Game of Thrones construction toy sets got a lot of attention. R-rated licenses for brick-building toys were a new direction. Plus, McFarlane’s idea of putting realistic “skins” on top of a LEGO-like build was a new innovation. But it turned out to be one collectors didn’t really like.
McFarlane only made the first GoT set, and scrapped several proposed follow-ups. Fans of brick toys apparently prefer them to look more like LEGO. Once the company made Five Nights at Freddy‘s the flagship license in that category, they used minifigs that matched the style rather than looking more like gashapon. That became their best-selling license ever.

This left Game of Thrones without a building partner, until now. Mattel‘s Mega Construx, which recently dove into some R-rated classics like Aliens, is making LEGO-ish toys that actually look LEGO-ish. ToyWiz got an early look at their first Game of Thrones construction toy set, Daenerys with Drogon, and is taking preorders for $79.99. According to their description, the completed Drogon has a two-foot wingspan and measures 20 inches long.
We’re intrigued by what may come next. Will Mega Construx do their own take on McFarlane’s Iron Throne set? Will they get wild enough to make full-on castles? Much more than Daenerys is presumably riding on this Drogon. Now that they’ve made dragon parts, Viserion and the Night King seem likely follow-ups.
