Drew Van Acker Joins Titans Season 2 as Aqualad

The cast of DC Universe’s Titans continues to fill out its ranks. TV Insider is reporting that Drew Van Acker has joined the cast in the show’s upcoming second season. He’ll encounter the titular superteam as the hero known as Aqualad.

Van Acker came to prominence when he starred as Jason DiLaurentis on Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars. After he made his final appearance on that show in 2016, he began starring on CBS’ short-lived Training Day series. He has also had main roles on Cartoon Network’s Tower Prep and Lifetime’s Devious Maids. Van Acker began teasing his involvement with Titans last month with a cryptic post on his Instagram page. You can see it for yourself below.

Two heroes have adopted the Aqualad mantle in the DC Comics universe. However, it sounds like Van Acker will play the classic version, known only as Garth. This iteration of the character debuted in Adventure Comics #269 in 1960 and was created by Robert Bernstein and Ramona Fradon. Garth was the offspring of King Thar and Queen Berra and the heir to the throne of Idyllists, an Atlantean colony settled in the Hidden Valley. He eventually became Aquaman’s sidekick and was a founding member of the Teen Titans.

It’s not clear if Van Acker’s character will only recur on Titans or if he’ll join the team full-time. If it’s the latter, we can probably bank on appearance by Aquaman himself at some point. Assuming the Justice League exists in the show’s universe, it would certainly be interesting to hear Iain Glen’s Bruce Wayne share stories about his time working with Aqualad’s former partner.
