Superman Edges Out Spider-Man as America’s Most Popular Superhero

For the last two decades, superheroes have dominated American popular culture. Everyone has their preference. However, it looks like the Man of Steel is officially the country’s favorite superhero. Via Heroic Hollywood, A new survey conducted by OnePoll, on behalf of Visit Anaheim, recently named the most popular superheroes in the U.S.A. And sitting proudly at the top of the list is the Last Son of Krypton himself, Superman.

This might be surprising, since the modern conversation about superheroes has been primarily driven by their appearances in movies. Regardless, Clark Kent hasn’t had much luck on the big screen in the past 20 years thanks to the middling reactions to Superman Returns and the films of the DCEU. However, the ranking doesn’t come completely out of left field. After all, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s most famous creation did popularize the superhero genre back in 1938. Plus, it doesn’t get more patriotic than fighting for truth, justice, and the American way.

Coming in second place is your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, although Peter Parker is always a strong contender for the top spot. Rounding out the top five are Batman, Captain America, and Iron Man.

The poll also included rankings for the country’s favorite comic book villains. It shouldn’t shock anyone that the Joker had this one in the bag. Even to non-comic fans, the character’s devilish grin and vibrant wardrobe are also instantly recognizable. Trailing behind him are Catwoman at #2 and Venom at #3. Venom’s high ranking would certainly explain the massive financial success of his poorly received solo film in 2018. Unfortunately, Catwoman’s popularity didn’t translate to impressive box office figures when her own Halle Berry-led spinoff bowed in 2004.

Additionally, OnePoll asked participants what superpowers they’d most like to have, and the result all but confirms that Americans have little respect for other people’s privacy. Invisibility was the most popular choice with 37% of the vote, followed by healing, time travel, superhuman strength, and superhuman intelligence.
