Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland Is Developing a Star Wars Series For Disney+

For their next big Star Wars TV project, Disney and Lucasfilm are turning to one of the writers behind one of last year’s best new series. Variety is reporting that Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland will spearhead a new Star Wars series for Disney+.

Headland co-created Russian Doll with Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. Their collaboration netted two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. The series was renewed for a second season last summer. Headland also wrote and directed Bachelorette (based on her play of the same name) in 2012 and Sleeping With Other People in 2015. Additionally, Headland has directed episodes of Black Monday, SMILF, and Heathers.

According to Variety’s sources, Headland’s series will be “female-centric” and it “takes place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects.” This isn’t the only mystery Star Wars project in the works. Back in February, it was reported that Sleight director J.D. Dillard was collaborating with former Luke Cage writer Matt Owens on a movie set in a galaxy far, far away. However, it’s still not clear if that film will hit theaters or premiere on Disney+.

Despite the ongoing coronavirus shutdown, Lucasfilm continues to make headway on its various Star Wars plans. The studio recently began filling out the supporting cast for its Cassian Andor series and also hired Joby Harold to script the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Additionally, Jon Favreau has reportedly started writing The Mandalorian season 3.
