Earlier this year, Disney moved forward with its reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise by hiring Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin and original Pirates screenwriter, Ted Elliott, to script the new project. However, the studio has now set a new female-led Pirates of the Caribbean film in motion, with Margot Robbie slated to headline the movie.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie will reteam with Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson, who will write the script for the new film. Additionally, THR notes that this is a separate film from Mazin and Elliott’s Pirates movie. It’s not even considered a spinoff of the core Pirates films. Instead, Robbie and Hodson’s Pirates film will be “a wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker.”
Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the first five Pirates of the Caribbean films, will be attached to both of the current projects.

It’s less clear if Disney has any plans to bring back Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp headlined five films as Captain Jack. However, he has become a more controversial figure due to his ongoing legal feud with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Disney has reportedly made plans to move beyond Captain Jack. Regardless, it’s still possible that he could eventually return to the franchise.
