The Boys Cast Promises Even More Craziness in Season 2

It’s not *quite* as boundary-pushing as the comic that inspired it. Regardless, The Boys certainly carved out its own gory space in the superhero landscape last year thanks to its violent tone and irreverence for costumed crimefighters. With season 2 dropping this fall, can the show’s cast and crew outdo themselves with the new episodes? As it turns out, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series stars Jack Quaid (Hughie) and Karl Urban (Butcher) teased the new season’s heightened intensity. According to Quaid, the effects of this were felt on and off the set.

“We have gone so much further,” said Quaid. “No one is ready. Really. No one. I have done things this season I will never forget, [things] I’ve never done in my career and probably will not in the future. We just go above and beyond in terms of insane, jockeying moments.”

As fans saw in the series’ latest trailer, season 2 picks up with The Boys on the run from the law. Apparently, Butcher is wanted for the murder of Madelyn Stillwell, which was really the work of Antony Starr’s Homelander. Butcher is going to want revenge, especially after what he discovered in the season 1 finale. However, Urban insists that Butcher is a bit more complex than some viewers might give him credit for.

“There’s the monster, the violent psychopath, the killer,” said Urban. “But there’s also the more compassionate side, the more humanistic side of Billy… There are really some wonderful, unlikely relationships that are formed. Billy thinks the only good Supe is a dead Supe, and this season is really a season about growth. He’s coming to understand that things aren’t that black and white, there’s a certain shade of grey. He’s coming to understand that there is a benefit that comes with tolerance and being able to see that if he can use an asset, even if it’s a Supe, to achieve his goal, then he’s got to do it.”

The Boys season 2 hits Amazon Prime on September 4.
