George Lucas Originally Planned Luke Skywalker’s Death for Episode VIII

Even though the Star Wars Skywalker saga is over, the iconic story will be the subject of debate for years to come. One of its most controversial moments is Luke Skywalker’s death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Well, it turns out that George Lucas himself wanted to see Luke Skywalker becoming one with the Force in his scrapped plans for Episode VIII. So it might be time to re-evaluate Rian Johnson’s contribution to the saga. At least, that’s what Lucasfilm creative executive Pablo Hidalgo claims in his brand book, Star Wars: Fascinating Facts.

One fan who already obtained the book took to Twitter to share the information with the world (via That Hashtag Show).

Things get even more interesting. Apparently Skywalker’s peculiar behavior in TLJ is close to what Lucas had in mind since the very beginning. As was Rey.

The Star Wars: Fascinating Facts book is a collection of facts from the multi-decade history of the franchise. According to its official synopsis, the book “is a compendium of hundreds of little-known facts about all nine episodes in the Skywalker Saga—from behind-the-scenes on-set tidbits to stories about how the tale of Star Wars was created. Profiles of important characters and early drafts of scripts show what might have been, details of how famous scenes were filmed, and other firsthand accounts from cast and crew members.”

The book is available as of today at every major book retailer.
