Norman Reedus Pitched The Walking Dead Daryl-Carol Spinoff in 2018

It wasn’t just fans who were surprised to hear The Walking Dead is ending with Season 11; some of the show’s stars were as well. And Norman Reedus was one of the surprised ones, though he will stay in TWD Universe for a while as the protagonist of the upcoming Daryl-focused spin-off. While talking with EW Live, the actor revealed that his character and Carol were originally supposed to leave and return to the flagship series from time to time.

“I didn’t know the flagship show would end,” Reedus said (via EW). “The whole thing was we would take off and we’d come back and check in and we would take off. So I didn’t know that was going to happen. And to be honest, I was hoping that would never happen because, you know, that’s the mothership. I’m scared to leave the mothership. That’s scary new ground. I mean, I’m excited for the spin-off and I’m excited for the type of show it will be, but I didn’t see that coming that. That kind of came out of nowhere.”

Reedus went on to add that the discussion for the spin-off dated back to 2018 when Greg Nicotero filmed the Season 9 finale.

“Angela and I started talking about it during the episode Greg directed with the snow,” he said. “I remember that we started talking about it then. I was pitching these ideas, ’cause it was kind of like ‘After eight years really, where do you see this show going?’ And I had an idea and I kind of threw it out there and we talked about it a lot.”

According to the actor, the writers planted the spin-off seed during a dialogue that Daryl had with Carol about hopping on a motorcycle and explore the new corners of TWD Universe back in the Season 10 premiere. He and Melissa McBride even created Spotify playlists for the possible show.
