Following Johnny Depp’s exit from Fantastic Beasts 3, word broke that Warner Bros. already had their eye on Mads Mikkelsen to replace him as the new Grindelwald. This news was met with a lot of excitement from Harry Potter fans and admirerers of Mikkelsen’s work. But apparently, the announcement may have been premature, because Mikkelsen has yet to hear from the filmmakers.
Mikkelsen addressed his potential Fantastic Beasts 3 involvement while speaking to IGN about his upcoming film, Chaos Walking. The original report claimed that he was currently “in talks” to succeed Depp as Grindelwald in the sequel. However, Mikkelsen revealed that he still hasn’t had any meetings with either the studio or director David Yates.
“Oh, that is on the rumor basis as we speak,” said Mikkelsen. “So I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that phone call.”

Mikkelsen’s comments don’t exactly read like a denial. In fact, he actually sounds like he’s open to taking on the role. Regardless, it’s strange that WB hasn’t gotten in touch with him over a week after his “casting” was first reported. Fantastic Beasts 3 began shooting in the U.K. back in September, with Depp filming only one scene before the studio asked him to step down from the role.
Fantastic Beasts 3 will hit theaters on July 15, 2022.
