Note From the Editor: This week, Superhero Hype’s cosplay correspondent, Ashlynne Dae, is back with a fan-favorite from The Sandman. Meet Death, of the Endless. She’s probably one of the most well-adjusted characters in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics. Kat Dennings is currently voicing Death in The Sandman Audible adaptation. However, Ashlynne’s devotion to the character goes back much further than that.
“You get what everyone gets, you get a life.” One of my favorite quotes in all of comic history, as said by one of my most long-standing favorite characters: Death, of the Endless.

It’s easy to do a closet cosplay of a goth icon when you yourself are also a goth, but it doesn’t make it any less special to me.

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Death From The Sandman #1
Death is the sweet, perky, trad-goth embodiment of one of the universe’s constants. Being a spooky babe myself, I have always loved her style, her attitude towards the end of life, and her ability to do her work with a welcoming smile and gentle explanations because it helped people accept their fate.

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Death From The Sandman #2
When I was a wee high schooler, I even dressed like Death without even realizing it! I had no idea who she was or what comic she played a supporting role in (before starring in some titles herself).

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Death From The Sandman #3
One day when I was 15, a guy asked if I was cosplaying Death. I didn’t even know what cosplay was, but I did go home and look up what he was talking about.
To my shock I was staring back at someone I saw myself in.

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Death From The Sandman #4
I had the same black, curly, big, messy hair (I used to dye it black in those days), the same heavy eyeliner (sans swirl), and wore the same outfit: a black tank, skinny jeans and winklepicker boots, right down to the very same necklace I always wore everyday for ten years, a silver ankh.

I loved that necklace so much I even got that same symbol tattooed on my back a couple years later. And here I thought I was so original. Hah!

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Death From The Sandman #6
Needless to say I fell in love with the Sandman universe after that, and Neil Gaiman became one of my favorite authors.

Superhero Hype Cosplay: Death From The Sandman #7
So when listening to the new audiobook release of the first volume of Sandman, I was inspired to do a proper cosplay of one of my favorite goth ladies that weren’t just my clothes, even if it absolutely was a costume that consisted of just my clothes.
