Word of the show’s renewal comes nearly two weeks after it aired its mid-season finale. Previously, Walking Dead Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple told THR that the current season was initially supposed to go on hiatus after airing eight episodes this year. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic forced them to shift gears and save the original mid-season closer for 2021. Fear the Walking Dead recently resumed production on season 6’s remaining episodes.

Meanwhile, The Walking Dead universe continues to grow with a handful of spinoff programs currently in the works. The latest spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, wrapped up its first season earlier this week. AMC is also preparing a Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series as well as a spinoff focusing on Daryl and Carol from the main series, which will be a “road show,” according to producers. There’s also a planned series of films centering on Andrew Lincoln’s return as Rick Grimes is still in development.
AMC has yet to announce a return date for Fear the Walking Dead.
