The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Latest Featurette Explores the Heroes’ Humanity

Although The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has yet to bring its titular heroes back together, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes will join forces against a handful of new superpowered threats. However, the show also aims to develop them as individuals. In a new behind-the-scenes featurette, the series’ producers (as well as the stars themselves) explain how they manage to strike a balance between these two tasks.

Dubbed “Continuation,” the featurette explores the benefits of using the TV medium to build on story threads that originated on the big screen. As director Kari Scogland notes, big action is key to any MCU production. Regardless, it’s just as important to take a look at the “human side” of its larger-than-life characters. Sam and Bucky are clearly facing different struggles in their personal lives. But it’s their shared search for meaning that grounds their partnership in reality.

“For Bucky, it’s the legacy of the Winter Soldier,” said executive producer Nate Moore. “His anchor point to the person who knew him before he was a murder machine no longer exists. So Bucky feels unmoored in the series and is looking for his purpose. And Sam Wilson is very much doing the same thing.”

Another big part of the show is Sam’s reluctance to take on the mantle of Captain America. As viewers saw in the first episode, he still isn’t comfortable with wielding Steve Rogers’ iconic shield. According to head writer Malcolm Spellman, addressing this dilemma was unavoidable.

“I felt like we would be dishonest just on a human level if we had this Black man just accept this symbol without having real ambivalence about it,” said Spellman

The notion of what Blackness means in America ties very much into Sam’s journey through the events of the show,” added Moore.

The second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres tomorrow, March 26, on Disney+.
