More than 10 years after her first appearance in Iron Man 2, Natasha Romanoff is finally getting top billing in the MCU with the release of this Friday’s Black Widow. Some fans might consider this to be too little, too late, especially given that Natasha died in Avengers: Endgame. But according to Kevin Feige, the new film plays a significant role in setting up the franchise’s future. Marvel has released yet another featurette that explains why Black Widow is the best movie to kick off Phase Four.
It’s no secret that Marvel has waited years to give Scarlett Johansson’s superspy her own standalone adventure. And in Feige’s view, releasing Black Widow now is “one of the great post-Infinity Saga opportunities.” Because the film takes place before Avengers: Infinity War, it gives audiences that chance to re-examine the past from different angles. Plus, Feige once again teased that the supporting cast will have roles to play in upcoming projects.

“You know a lot about the characters already, so there are presumptions that you bring to it,” said Feige. “And we like to subvert those.”
Black Widow hits theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 9.
