Karen Gillan Wants To Keep Playing Nebula After Guardians 3
Although she debuted as a villain in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula has gone on to become a member of the cosmic super-team and one of the MCU’s more underappreciated heroines. Nebula’s popularity has also done wonders for Karen Gillan’s career. Some performers tend to leave the MCU behind after making a certain number of movies. Regardless, Gillan has no interest in saying goodbye to Nebula anytime soon.
Writer/director James Gunn and Drax actor Dave Bautista have both said that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will probably be their last Marvel film. But while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Gillan expressed her desire to stay with the franchise for years to come.
“I love my character so much,” said Gillan. “I’m sort of obsessed with her. (Laughs.) I just get such a kick out of playing a character that’s really removed from myself. But I also feel really emotionally invested in her through everything that she’s gone through with Thanos and all of that. So I would love to continue the journey of the character. I don’t know what that would really look like without James or Dave, but I really like playing her, so I’m not eager to finish.”

Gillan will reconvene with her co-stars later this year to start shooting the last film in the Guardians trilogy. She confessed that she still hasn’t read the latest draft of Gunn’s script. However, she did share new insight into Nebula’s makeup process. Apparently, the makeup team needs to make a new mold of her face before the start of every film. But in the case of Thor: Love and Thunder, in which she and her fellow Guardians will appear in next year, they used an older mold while they were filming the movie in Australia.
Gillan wouldn’t go into detail, but she said that new molds were for “longer, more intensive” shoots, implying that her screentime in the upcoming Thor sequel may be limited.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 23, 2023.
