DC Celebrates Batman Rogues With Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant

Batman Day has come and gone. But at the end of next month, his colorful cast of supervillains is getting its own giant-sized one-shot featuring new stories by more than a dozen writers and artists. DC has shared the first details for Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1, which gives the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery the spotlight it deserves.

The new special marks the 80th anniversary of one of Batman’s most recognizable adversaries, the Penguin. So it’s fitting that it also includes a contribution from Danny DeVito, who previously brought the character to life in Batman Returns in 1992. According to DC, DeVito and artist Dan Mora’s tale is a “fun heist story/romance” that pairs Oswald Cobblepot with Catwoman. But since Selina Kyle famously rejected the Penguin’s advances on the big screen, their “romance” is probably a one-sided affair.

At least seven other Batman villains will get their own chapters in the upcoming collection as well. Wes Craig, best known as the co-creator of Image’s Deadly Class, will write and draw a new story featuring Scarecrow. Poison Ivy will star in a tale from writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Emma Rios. Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Riccardo Federici will tackle another story featuring Ra’s al Ghul, while writers Nadia Shammas & Joshua Williamson and artist Max Raynor will give his daughter, Talia, her own adventure.

Other stories will spotlight the original Red Hood (by Stephanie Phillips and Max Fiumara), the Mad Hatter (by Dan Watters and Skylar Patridge), and Killer Moth (by Mairghread Scott and Ariela Kristantina).

Additionally, readers will be able to choose between eight different covers when the issue hits stands next month. Three of the covers highlight Penguin, Scarecrow, and Poison Ivy on their own. However, the remaining variants have some villains sharing cover space. Ra’s al Ghul and Talia are featured on one variant, while another features Killer Moth, Red Hood, and Mad Hatter. We can also expect to see Batman himself appear on a cover or two. You can view all the options in the gallery below.

Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1 hits comic shops on November 30.
