Tim Roth Says He Was ‘Surprised’ To Return For Marvel’s She-Hulk

Marvel’s 2022 slate on Disney+ kicks off in late March with the premiere of Moon Knight. But if the studio follows the same release pattern as last year’s small-screen offerings, we can probably expect another new MCU series to bow shortly after the Fist of Khonshu wraps up his initial six-episode run. Marvel’s She-Hulk series may be next in line to premiere, barring anything unforeseen.

Aside from introducing Tatiana Maslany as the titular Jade Giantess, the series will co-star longtime Marvel mainstay Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. But more surprisingly, it features the return of Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination, the role he originated in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. And no one seems more surprised by Blonsky’s comeback than Roth himself.

Roth briefly discussed his return to the superhero realm in a new interview with Uproxx. Technically, She-Hulk won’t be the first time viewers have seen the Abomination since the early days of the MCU. He recently made a brief appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and apparently, that was indeed Roth providing the villain’s grunts in the film. However, She-Hulk is bound to give him a meatier role (and even better, actual lines).

“Well, honestly, it totally surprised me,” said Roth. “I went in to chat with Kevin Feige and he said, ‘I’ve got an idea. Come in.’ Really? Really? Because the original thing that I did, when I did that first Incredible Hulk movie, was I just did it for my kids.”

Roth also acknowledged that The Incredible Hulk came out at a time when the MCU’s longevity was anything but guaranteed. But he sounds happy that the franchise, as well as a few MCU-adjacent productions, eventually found their footing. Overall, he found his She-Hulk experience to be “a blast,” especially when it came to working with Ruffalo and Maslany.

“In a way, it was pre-Iron Man,” added Roth. “It hadn’t come out. And that was when they figured it out. Figured out, ‘Oh, that’s how you do it.’ And then they worked it out. Some of them better than others, whatever, but they worked it out. For me, Wolverine and very much Deadpool. So. it was just for my kids when they were little. Did that. So I was amazed when they came back around and said, ‘How would you feel about…’ And I went, ‘Yeah. All right!’ And we just shot it, I guess in the summer last year or whatever. I think that they’re in post now doing it, so whenever.”

“Bonus, I got to work with Mark Ruffalo,” continued Roth. “Awesome. Who I love. And I don’t know if I’m allowed to say. Oh, I can say that. But this extraordinary woman, Tatiana…Incredible, that woman. So that was a blast. It was insane.”

Disney+ still hasn’t announced an official premiere date for She-Hulk.
