AfterShock’s Dead Day Adaptation Gets a Series Order at Peacock

The creators behind The Vampire Diaries are putting a different spin on the zombie genre for their next big TV project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peacock has officially ordered a new series based on AfterShock Comics’ Dead Day.

Writer Ryan Parrott launched Dead Day with artist Evgeniy Bornyakov in 2020. The series imagines an annual holiday where dead people rise from their graves. Some of them come back to spend more time with their loved ones. However, others return with more nefarious goals in mind. Following its initial five-issue run, AferShock recently picked up the series for a second volume. Parrott is also working on the TV adaptation as a consulting producer.

Leading the charge on Dead Day are Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, who will write and co-showrun the upcoming adaptation. Aside from developing The Vampire Diaries with Plec back in 2009, Williamson is also launched the Scream franchise with Wes Craven in 1996. He achieved further success two years later when he created Dawson’s Creek for The WB. Meanwhile, Plec is currently working on another show for Peacock, Vampire Academy, based on the books by Richelle Mead. She also inked an overall deal with Universal TV in 2020.

“We have been looking for a project to do together and Dead Day has all the ingredients we love as storytellers,” said Plec and Williamson in a joint statement. “Love, death, thrills and tears — and we know Susan Rovner and her team at Peacock is the perfect fit for this project.”

“Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson are each a powerhouse unto themselves,” added Vivian Cannon, executive VP of drama development at Universal TV. “So we couldn’t have been more excited when they told us they wanted to team up again. Dead Day will be everything Julie and Kevin’s audiences love about their work—emotional, unexpected and totally bingeable!”
