The CW’s Female Zorro Series Gets a New Six-Script Order

CW execs must like what they’re seeing so far from Robert Rodriguez’s gender-flipped Zorro TV series. Because according to Deadline, the network has ordered six more scripts for the potential show. This is in addition to the pilot episode, bringing the overall script count to seven.

A female-led Zorro series has been in the works at multiple different networks since at least 2019. However, it wasn’t until last year that Rodriguez joined the project alongside his sister and co-writer, Rebecca Rodriguez. The show was originally in development at NBC before it changed hands to The CW last month. Around the same time, former Mayans M.C. scribe Sean Tretta joined the writing team as well. And if the series actually gets picked up, Tretta will also serve as the showrunner.

This new take on the classic Zorro story will follow a young Latina woman who joins a secret society to avenge her father’s murder and ultimately adopts the titular persona. Disney+ is also currently developing its own telenova-style Zorro series with Wilmer Valderrama playing the role.

Zorro is one of several new series that could be airing on The CW in the near future. Earlier today, the network also handed out pilot orders to The Winchesters (a prequel to Supernatural), Walker: Independence, and Gotham Knights. However, Deadline notes that if The CW is satisfied with Zorro’s new scripts, the logical next step is an official series order.

Tretta and the Rodriguez siblings are executive producing Zorro, with Rebecca also sitting in the director’s chair. They will be joined by Propgate’s Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Rodney Ferrell as well as Geoff Clark and Eric Bromberg. Zorro Productions, Inc. President and CEO John Gertz will also executive produce with Jay Weisleder.
