Director Matt Reeves has been saying for months that he hopes The Batman will spawn a trilogy of movies, and Robert Pattinson is definitely onboard with this idea. But although new installments featuring Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will depend on how well the first film performs next month, it sounds like Reeves has begun pitching his ideas to Warner Bros. While speaking at the film’s U.K. premiere (via CBR), Reeves confirmed that The Batman sequel talks are happening now.
Reeves noted that a potential sequel would still be a ways off. For now, he seems focused on promoting the film he just made.
“I mean look, you don’t make number one as if there’s going to be number two,” said Reeves. “You have to make number one as if you’re swinging for the fences and it has to be a movie that stands and lives on its own.”

“But I really believe in what we’ve done and I’d be excited to tell more stories,” continued Reeves. “We are already telling other stories in the streaming space, we’re doing stuff on HBO Max, we’re doing a Penguin show with Colin [Farrell] which is gonna be super cool, and we’re doing some work on some other stuff too. But we have started talking about another movie, but, you know, right now we’ll just put it out in the world and I’ll try to enjoy this.”
Aside from Farrell’s Penguin spinoff, Reeves is also teaming with HBO Max on another show that explores the inner workings of the Gotham City Police Department. Additionally, he’s an executive producer on the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader animated series. So whatever his plans are for Batman’s big-screen future, he clearly doesn’t plan on leaving the Dark Knight’s orbit anytime soon.
The Batman will hit theaters on March 4.
