He’s just been in one of the biggest movies of all time with Spider-Man: No Way Home. But Benedict Cumberbatch seems convinced his next one will be just as successful. How high can Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness go? Talking with Empire, he claims, “It’s a big, big movie…And if it brings off the level of ambition it’s got, we’re going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I’ll put my flag in the sand.” Bold words from the Sorcerer Supreme, as Spider-Man is a character with far more name recognition. But if Multiverse of Madness leans into its suspected crossover cameos, and manages to convince audiences they’ll have to see it before getting spoiled online, he may have a point.
As for that “big, big” scope, the actor adds, “There’s a lot of reckoning, and a lot of self-discovery. Strange is almost a stranger to himself before this film unfolds and reveals what, essentially, is in his nature, that he then has to either confront or resist or fall into or become. There are some very bold ideas, and some extraordinary tests of Strange and encounters. There are some very unexpected conclusions.”
