Marvel Reveals Doctor Strange’s Unique Way of Making House Calls

For all the power Doctor Strange has as Sorcerer Supreme, he also has his limits. He can astral project across great distances instantly, but there is little he can do but observe in this ghostly form. How, then, does the good Doctor answer the call to action when circumstances limit his mobility yet require his presence?

The answer was provided in Captain America #3 by J. Michael Straczynski, Jesus Saiz, and Lan Medina. Called into a crime scene by Misty Knight, Steve Rogers found a room full of mystic writings and strange symbols. These included an apparent representation of Captain America’s shield. When Cap suggested seeking an expert’s advice, Misty revealed that she had a special way of summoning Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange manifests through action figures

Doctor Strange speaks through toy

Using a Doctor Strange action figure and a special phrase, Misty was able to get Stephen Strange to manifest inside the toy. Strange explained to a flabbergasted Cap that he had placed a little of his spirit in 47 figurines bearing his likeness. He then gave these figurines to “trusted allies around the world,” with instructions on what words to say to get his attention.

Doctor Strange explained just why this step was necessary. Even the Sorcerer Supreme cannot be in two places at once, and his allies could not always rely upon having some way of communicating with him. By giving those he trusted a simulacrum of himself, Stephen Strange could be assured of always having a way to reach his allies.

Additionally, the action figure allowed Doctor Strange to overcome a key weakness of his astral form. There are many magics that require a physical anchor, which Stephen Strange cannot manage while astral projecting. The action figures offer him that anchor, allowing him to astral project to his friends’ sides and aid them.

Captain America #3 is now available in comic shops everywhere.
