Emma Stone didn’t know that Marvel was once considering bringing Gwen Stacy back for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The recently published MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios novel written by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards revealed that, at one point in time, Marvel Studios was considering bringing back Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Marvel ultimately opted not to go in that direction as they felt the “story was already overstuffed.”
Stone, however, just recently learned that Marvel was even considering bringing her back, as she told ComicBook.com at the red-carpet premiere of Poor Things that this was all news to her.
“I have never heard that before,” Stone said. “This is awesome. This is a big moment for me. Thank you for telling me.”

When asked if she was aware that some fans want Marvel to bring back Gwen (who died at the end of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Spider-Gwen, Stone said, “Oh my God. That’s again, new information. Everyone [wants that to happen]? Everyone in the world?”
While Stone didn’t make it into 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, the MCU movie does feature appearances from both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, along with a number of villains from their respective Spider-Man movies. With Spider-Man: No Way Home having made $1.922 billion at the global box office off of a budget of $200 million, another Spider-Man movie is currently in early stages of development.
Poor Things, meanwhile, is getting a limited release in the United States on December 8, 2023, before it then goes wide on December 22. Directed by The Favourite’s Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie also stars Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Margaret Qualley.
