Daredevil’s Deborah Ann Woll Explains What Set Karen Page Apart

Deborah Ann Woll, who played Karen Page in Netflix‘s Daredevil and its spin-off The Punisher, broke down what made her character work, and what she would like to see if Karen is ever to appear on the screen again.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Woll talked about what Karen meant to her, saying the part was “one of the great roles of my career so far.” Although she reportedly won’t be part of Marvel Studios‘ upcoming reboot Daredevil: Born Again, Woll is thinking ahead to the next time Karen Page is portrayed in the Daredevil franchise. “I think any iteration of Karen that comes back, if she comes back, if it’s me, if it’s not me, if it’s in comic books, if it’s in 50 years, whatever it is, I just hope that it continues to honor her. That you’re never just the sidekick.”

Daredevil starred Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, a blind lawyer who secretly had enhanced senses that enabled him to lead a double life as a superhero in Hell’s Kitchen. Karen worked for Matt’s law firm, unaware of his powers but dedicated to pursuing justice through her own ability. “You might not see the Karen Page story, but she’s having a whole TV show on her own that no one filmed,” Woll said.

Woll concluded her hopes for Karen’s future by asking writers to “[m]ake sure that, for our characters, who are not superheroes or are not the lead fighter in that way, that we just continue to honor that they have full lives. That’s what I really appreciated about my time playing Karen Page, and I would hope that if I got to do it again or if it continues, that people would have the same care for her.”

Daredevil returns to TV, but without Karen Page

Cox will reprise the role of Matt in Daredevil: Born Again, with Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Bernthal also set to appear as their respective Netflix characters, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and Frank Castle/The Punisher.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will serve as co-directors on the series. The two were brought in when executives reviewed footage that had been filmed and decided to change direction. Dario Scardapane, executive producer on both seasons of The Punisher, was tapped as the new showrunner. The original showrunners, Chris Ord and Matt Corman, are still attached as executive producers.

The first season of Daredevil: Born Again will consist of 18 episodes and air on Disney+. A release window has not yet been announced.
