She’s a master of magic and heir to a long line of magical heroes. She’s a member of the Justice League and an honest to goodness celebrity. But there was a time when Zatanna Zatara spurned the power that was her legacy. This secret history of DC’s most famous magician is revealed in a new series from DC Black Label, titled Bringing Down the House.
Written by Mariko Tamaki with art by Javier Rodriguez, Bringing Down the House centers around a young Zatanna. Not yet the hero she is destined to become, this Zatanna is a superstar stage magician. She is also stuck working the sleaziest hotel and casino in all of Las Vegas.
The nicer hotels would love to have her as a headliner. However, thanks to an incident from her childhood, Zatanna is reluctant to work the true magic that is her birthright. However, circumstances are at work which will require the last of the Zataras to embrace her power.

Why Zatanna has a DC Black Label series
While she is best known as a Justice League member, Zatanna has a history of working the dark side of the DC Universe. She’s a frequent confidant and ex-girlfriend of con-man mage John Constantine. She also has the dubious honor of being one of the few DC characters to make extensive appearances in the Vertigo Universe.
“There is nothing more fun than working on a character like Zatanna who, issue after issue, invites you to explore every nook and cranny of the language of comics,” says artist Javier Rodriguez.
Mariko Tamaki is equally enthusiastic. “We’re very excited for people to see this weird little story we’ve whipped up for their reading pleasure.”
Zatanna: Bringing Down the House #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on June 25, 2024.
