Bumblebee is set to breathe new life into the Transformers film franchise later this week. Now, it looks like the comics are following suit. Via the The Hollywood Reporter, IDW’s ongoing Transformers series is starting fresh with a brand new first issue coming this spring.
Rather than continuing previous storylines, the new Transformers travels back to Cybertron before its inhabitants brought their fight to Earth. The rebooted series will publish two issues every month and explore the origins of the dispute between the Autobots and the Decepticons. According to the announcement, the book will shed light on an unnamed character’s death that led the two factions to turn on each other. Scottish fantasy writer Brian Ruckley, known for his Godless World trilogy of novels, is scripting the new title. Angel Hernandez and Ron Joseph are handling the artwork.

Hernandez and Joseph are veterans of other IDW series, but Ruckley is making his comic book debut with Transformers. The author called his latest undertaking “a real privilege” and continued, “Just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes — and one of the best casts of characters — that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.”
“We are eager to begin this new chapter in Transformers storytelling,” said Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s vice president of global publishing. “We are excited to begin a tale that will be accessible and appealing to readers unfamiliar with Transformers lore, while still providing the depth and drama that our longtime fans expect. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve got the right team and the right characters to do it.”
