Marvel Announces New Champions Ongoing Series

Following the events of Marvel’s upcoming Outlawed one-shot, teenage superheroes will become illegal. But despite what their government says, the young heroes will still proudly carry the torch in a new ongoing title. Via Screen Rant, Marvel is relaunching their Champions title later this year. The book will follow the exploits of Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man as they navigate their new status quo.

Champions comes from writer Eve L. Ewing, who’s also penning Outlawed, and artist Simone Di Meo. According to the series’ description Kamala Khan is the one who announces to the world that her team won’t be retiring any time soon. As Tony Infante’s cover for the first issue shows, her actions inspire a movement complete with its own hashtag (#forkamala). Unfortunately, she and her fellow heroes will be hunted by the C.R.A.D.L.E. task force as they continue to operate. They’ll also have the small matter of a mysterious spy to contend with.

The new series obviously takes cues from Marvel’s Civil War crossover. Much like that event, Ewing teases that Champions will herald the start of big changes to the larger Marvel Universe.

“Alanna Smith came to me with this story idea last summer,” said Ewing. “I was so into it and we were just talking about it as a cool series that I would do. But after I started working on the pitch, it became clear that there was interest from other creative teams in picking up the story, and that was humbling and cool. So now it’s creeping more toward becoming a complete status quo change for the Marvel Universe, and I’ve connected with a couple of other writers to think about what they’re gonna be doing in other titles. Can’t wait to see where it all goes!”
