DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Producers Address John Constantine’s Storyline

Spoiler warning for Episode 5.04 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow!

The latest episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow ended with John Constantine’s apparent death while he was almost coughing his lungs out of his body. Just seconds before, Astra used the occult detective’s soul chip to give him instant terminal lung cancer and accelerate John’s death by 10 years. Most of the comic-book fans have immediately recognized the beginning of the Hellblazer story arc Dangerous Habits. And in speaking with TVLineDC’s Legends of Tomorrow producers addressed John Constantine’s future in the show.

“We wanted to give him one of the iconic storylines from the comics, where he gets lung cancer, and he’s going to try to do everything he can, in the most John Constantine type way, to get out of it,” all while “wrestling with mortality and all this rich, deep character stuff,” EP Grainne Godfree said.

It will be no easy task to do justice to Garth Ennis’s work, but producer Phil Klemmer believes that they found the right “balance” between the comic-book material source and the TV adaptation.

“We want to honor [Dangerous Habits], [but] at the same time, we want to break new ground, as well,” Klemmer added. “Hopefully, we found the right balance with that. But there’s no predicting where we’re headed based on the books,” which were “a great launching point.”

The fans will have to wait for the upcoming episodes of the show to see whether Constantine will manage to save himself or not. The storyline’s kick-off bodes well though.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Episode 5.05 will air Feb. 25 at 9/8c on The CW. What do you think about the latest DC’s Legends of Tomorrow episode’s cliffhanger?
