Showrunner Opens Up About Discarded Plans for Luke Cage Season 3

The relationship between Netflix and Luke Cage was perhaps brief but definitely intense. After a beginning which boded well for all the parties involved, the news of the show’s cancellation by Netflix before the series third season came out of the blue. Back in 2018, Netflix couldn’t find an agreement with Marvel and it ultimately led to the show’s premature cancellation. Speaking with TV GuideLuke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker reflected on the show’s legacy.

“Honestly, Luke Cage was the only show that ever disrupted Netflix, where it actually, you know, the servers went down,” he said. “We were the only thing that ever shut down Netflix, period. I take great pride in the fact that we created something so popular we shut them down for a minute.”

Then Coker went on adding some tiny details about plans for the third season of the show. According to the showrunner, that third season would have brought Luke Cage “as a character full circle”.

“You see people online that were like, “Oh my god, I turned Luke into a gangster.” They wouldn’t be [saying that] if they had the opportunity to see all three seasons and see the directions Luke would have gone,” he said. “I was always a Luke Cage fan, but I was probably, ultimately, a Chris Claremont, Frank Miller, Wolverine, X-Men Golden Era comic book fan, you know? And it wasn’t until Brian Michael Bendis rebooted Luke Cage within Jessica Jones — that [I felt liberated to] approach established characters within the Luke Cage universe from a different perspective.”
