San Diego Comic-Con 2020 Is Cancelled, Will Return In 2021

San Diego Comic-Con 2020 Has Been Cancelled

The novel coronavirus pandemic has finally claimed this summer’s biggest comic convention. Via the official Comic-Con page, a statement from Comic-Con International reads that “with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020. The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.”

Fans who paid for badges for Comic-Con 2020 will soon be able to get refunds or the option to switch their tickets for Comic-Con 2021. Comic-Con’s hotel affiliate, onPeak, will also cancel this year’s hotel reservations and refund all deposits within then next few days. Additionally, Comic-Con’s sister event, WonderCon, will return to Anaheim on March 26-28, 2021.

San Diego Comic-Con was first held in 1970 as the Golden State Comic Book Convention. This marks the first time in five decades that Comic-Con has not returned to San Diego. It will also prevent CCI from celebrating Comic-Con’s 50th edition this year. However, the current health guidelines seemingly make any comic con impossible to run this year.

However, Comic-Con International isn’t giving up on its renovations for the Comic-Con Museum at Balboa Park. While CCI had planned to finish those renovations in time for the museum’s grand opening in 2021, it will instead “rephase” those plans without “[scaling] back the experience to be offered to visitors upon the Museum’s grand opening.”
