Marvel’s X-Men Crossover, X of Swords, Will Arrive In September

Back in February, Marvel revealed that the first X-Men crossover of the Dawn of X era will be X of Swords. However, the novel coronavirus pandemic threw the event off of its July release date. Now, Marvel has released a new X of Swords promo image that names co-writers Jonathan Hickman and Tini Howard, and artist Pepe Larraz as the creative team.  The pic also reveals that the first issue will arrive in September.

The top of the image features Apocalypse’s first Horsemen: Death, War, Pestilence, and Famine. At the bottom left is the High Summoner of Arakko, the son of War. To his right are young Cable, Apocalypse, Rachel Summers, M, and Beast. Below them are a hoard of demons. This ties into the backstory of Krakoa and Arakko; which were once a single living island. Apocalypse and his first Horsemen fought back a demonic invasion ages ago. But the Horsemen were lost and the islands were separated when Apocalypse sealed the dimensional rift to save the world.

The X-men titles have also hinted that an “Inferno” will soon reignite; which plays off the classic X-Men: Inferno crossover from 1988. It should also be noted that one of Inferno’s primary villains, Madelyne Pryor/Goblin Queen, recently returned in Fallen Angels. The older Cable also reappeared in Cable #1 while attempting to hold off a new demonic invasion.
