Author Tom King Talks Upcoming “Angry” Rorschach Miniseries

In a little more than a month, one of the most iconic Watchmen characters will get his own miniseries as the new Rorschach comic hits the stores. Even though many details about the upcoming story are still under wraps, author Tom King shared with THR some bits of his vision about the story involving the charismatic anti-hero. King revealed that he took some distance from both Alan Moore’s masterpiece and HBO’s series.

“It’s not Watchmen, but it’s using that vocabulary to talk about huge themes that are happening in our society,” he said. “And it’s using Watchmen almost as a symbol to say, this is important. The HBO Watchmen is not about the same things that ’86 Watchmen [comic] is about, [but] it’s about completely different themes of race in history in America. That kind of opened my eyes where I was, oh, this is possible, this can be done.”

The author went on to add that he didn’t do “a Watchmen cover song” by imitating someone else’s work. He told his own story, starting from the same iconic source material. King’s story is set in the year 2020 and is about that angry feeling that pervades modern society.

“We’re so angry all the time,” he stated. “And we have to do something with that anger in order not to go insane, and so that’s this. I mean, this is about an attempted assassination, it’s about people who got so angry, they tried to kill someone. And it’s about how they got to that place. And the whole mystery of is what motivated them to do that. It’s called Rorschach not because of the character, but because sort of what you see in these characters tells you more about yourself than about the characters. That’s the whole idea.”

It will be interesting to see how the upcoming 12-issue story will develop, since its titular anti-hero was killed during the events of Moore’s Watchmen. The TV series, meanwhile, showed a racist cult adopting his iconography, while DC’s semi-sequel Doomsday Clock saw a new Rorschach don the mask.

Rorschach #1 will debut on October 13.
