A New Mutant Team Rises in Marvel’s X-Men #1

Less than two years after relaunching its primary X-Men title, Marvel is hitting the reset button once again. And this time, readers will follow along with the adventures of a brand new team at its center. According to Marvel.com, the latest iteration of the X-Men features Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Sunfire, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch, and Polaris.

Spearheading the relaunch are writer Gerry Duggan, artist Pepe Larraz, and colorist Marte Gracia. Since 2019, Duggan has been presiding over another one of Marvel’s X-adjacent books, Marauders, with a rotating cast of artists. Meanwhile, Larraz helped current “Head of X” Jonathan Hickman usher in this bold new era in X-Men history as the artist on Marvel’s House of X miniseries. The new story spins out of Marvel’s recent X of Swords event, which concluded back in November.

“It’s my privilege and honor to be reteamed with Pepe Larraz as we throw beautiful and deadly threats at the X-Men beginning in July,” said Duggan in a new statement. “Mutants have saved themselves, and are now going to save the world. Krakoa will grow roots in the capital of the world, New York City, and the inaugural year will star Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch, Sunfire, and Polaris. The threats to Earth will come fast and hit hard, and every page from Pepe and Marte will blow your hair back. See you in July.”

In addition to Larraz’s main cover for the first issue (pictured above), Marvel is also releasing variant covers featuring illustrations by Marvel’s Stormbreakers, a program that spotlights up-and-coming artists from around the globe. Each artist was tasked with drawing different characters in connecting covers. The lineup includes Juann Cabal (Professor X), Carmen Carnera (Marvel Girl), Peach Momoko (Sunfire), Iban Coello (Synch), R.B. Silva (Cyclops), Natacha Bustos (Wolverine), Patrick Gleason (Rogue), and Joshua Cassara (Polaris). It’s a homage to Jim Lee’s X-Men #1 from 1991.

X-Men #1 hits comic shops on July 7.
