Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Hellfire Gala and X-Factor #10!
For months, there have been hints that there would be a murder at the X-Men’s Hellfire Gala. And for the record, there have been four murders, three of whom were mutants. Regardless, the resurrection protocols will likely bring Gabrielle Kinney/Scout, Pete Wisdom, and Christian Frost back to life. However, the same can’t be said for Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch. In the closing pages of X-Factor #10, Wanda’s body was discovered and she appears to be the victim of foul play. And since Wanda isn’t a mutant, resurrection is off the table for her.
Marvel has released Mark Brooks’ new cover for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #1. In Brooks’ homage to Michelangelo’s Pieta, Magneto cradles the body of the woman whom he once believed to be his daughter. Prior to 2014, Wanda and her brother, Pietro/Quicksilver, were the children of Magneto. However, a retcon changed their shared history and revealed that Magneto wasn’t their father after all.

Despite everything that passed between them, Wanda accepted Magneto’s invitation to the Hellfire Gala. They even shared a surrogate father-daughter dance in the waning hours of the party. Unfortunately for Magneto, suspicion has already fallen on him for Wanda’s death. According to Marvel, “the ongoing tension between the Avengers and the X-Men will explode as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes arrive on Krakoa to seek justice for their fallen teammate. All eyes turn to Magneto, but Marvel fans know all too well that when it comes to Magneto and the Maximoff twins, nothing is ever as simple as it seems.”
However, readers of Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men run know there’s no shortage of suspects on Krakoa. Magneto’s former Acolyte, Exodus, has been teaching mutant children to condemn Wanda as “the Pretender.” Additionally, several mutants hold a grudge against Wanda for the House of M incident. Wanda depowered most of the world’s mutants to spite her father. She was mentally ill at the time, but very few mutants have forgiven her for that.
Leah Williams and artist Lucas Werneck will be the creative team behind X-Men: The Trial of Magneto. The first issue will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, August 18.
