Marvel’s X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine Explore Logan’s Past and Future

Get ready for “the biggest Wolverine story of all time.” Earlier this year, Marvel announced two new Wolverine titles as part of its early 2022 slate. Now, the House of Ideas is peeling back the curtain on X Lives of Wolverine and its companion series, X Deaths of Wolverine.

Spearheading both titles is writer Benjamin Percy, and he has a lot of experience handling Wolverine’s adventures. His first brush with the character came in 2018, when he penned all 10 episodes of Marvel’s Wolverine: The Long Night podcast. Percy later returned to write the sequel, Wolverine: The Lost Trail. In 2020, Marvel recruited Percy to relaunch its ongoing Wolverine series in collaboration with artists Adam Kubert and Victor Bogdonavic.

Lives and Deaths will alternate new issues every week, all of which promise “shocking new revelations about Wolverine’s life,” with artists Kubert, Joshua Cassara, and Federico Vicentin collaborating with Percy. According to the official description, “fan-favorite eras of Wolverine’s saga are explored anew, along with never-before-seen episodes as Logan must travel to various points in time to prevent the death of a key figure in mutant history. But these lives are only one side of the story… If Wolverine’s future lies in the past, what does that mean for the present?”

Percy recently discussed his plans for both series in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I’m going to make a bold statement: I set out to write the greatest Wolverine story ever told,” said Percy. “I’m not trying to belittle previous creators when I say that. The opposite. I’m trying to honor them. When we reveal the expansive scope — and legacy elements — of the project, you’ll understand what I mean. We’re creating a definitive platform that channels all the Wolverine stories that came before, while shredding our way into a wild future.”

X Lives of Wolverine #1 will hit stores on January 5. It will be followed by X Deaths of Wolverine #1 on January 12.
