George R.R. Martin’s Wild Cards Universe Gets a New Marvel Miniseries

Nearly a decade before he published A Game of Thrones in 1996, George R.R. Martin lent his talents to a different fictional universe. In 1987, Martin edited the first book in the Wild Cards saga, an anthology series of novels that imagined an alternate post-World War II where an alien virus spread its way across the United States and gifted a lucky few with superhuman abilities. More than 40 authors (including Martin himself) have added to the series’ mythology over the last 25 years. But now, some of its earliest stories are getting re-imagined as comics.

Marvel has announced Wild Cards: The Drawing of Cards, a four-issue miniseries from writer Paul Cornell and artist Mike Hawthorne. The creative team will revisit stories penned by Martin, Harold Waldrop, and Roger Zelazny, all of which traced the impact of the Wild Card virus on the “Aces” who developed superpowers as well as the “Jokers” who were left with strange mutations.

Wild Cards is still a unique take on super heroes,” said Cornell. “A creation story that’s influenced everything since, but still maintains its power. It’s an honor and a pleasure to bring all these wonderful stories to their natural home at Marvel. And I hope to give George, Melinda and the rest of the Wild Cards Collective the credit they deserve for making the super hero myth new again. Plus: just look at that art!”

“As my fans may already know, the Wild Cards World holds a special place in my heart,” added Martin. “So to have the privilege of announcing that an industry titan like Marvel is going to produce the narrative from the beginning as a comic book brings me no end of joy.”

Wild Cards: The Drawing of Cards #1 hits comic shops on June 1.
