The original Blue Book series stunned readers with its weird stories of actual alleged alien sightings. Now, Dark Horse Comics is releasing a sequel — Blue Book: 1947.
Writer James Tynion IV, artist Michael Avon Oeming, and letterer Tom Napolitano return for the new series. The five-part Blue Book sequel explores the story of pilot Kenneth Arnold, who had an unexplainable encounter with several flying objects in 1947. The first issue also includes a backup story by writer Zac Thompson, with artwork by Gavin Fullerton and Aditya Bidikar.
Blue Book: 1947 #1 features seven covers by an all-star team of artists. The lineup includes Oeming, Fábio Moon, Michael Allred, Cully Hammer, Joe Quinones, and Christian Ward. These six covers can be viewed below. Dark Horse will reveal the final variant cover at a later date.
Blue Book tells true tales of horror
What separates Blue Book from similar comics is its non-fiction approach. The original series is based on the story of Betty and Barney Hill, who claimed to have been kidnapped by extraterrestrials in 1961. Many consider the Hill case to be the first credible account of an alien abduction.
The Hills underwent hypnosis under the supervision of psychiatrist Benjamin Simon. They independently recalled being taken aboard an alien ship, examined, and released. They also both described the aliens as little grey men, with large black eyes. Simon ultimately declared that the couple had experienced a “singular psychological aberration.”
Still, the Hills were notable for being reluctant to discuss their experiences publicly, and only seeking help after failing to find answers on their own. By contrast, other alleged abductees actively sought publicity, and often told stories about what the aliens wanted. The Hills made no such claims.
