Once the greatest Green Lantern, Sinestro abandoned the Corps to become the master of Fear itself. And the first wielder of the Yellow Power has found a new way to plague the DC Universe.
Green Lantern #5 by Jeremy Adams, Xermanico, and Romulo Fajardo Jr continues the saga of Sinestro’s exile to Earth. While he still has his Yellow Power Ring, Sinestro has no battery with which to charge it. This leads the villain to take control of several experimental drones, using them to terrorize multiple large cities.
Sinestro’s rival, the Green Lantern Hal Jordan, deduces that Sinestro is trying to provoke mass panic to recharge his ring. Jordan stops the drones and tracks Sinestro to his base — after speaking to the press to urge people to be brave. Unfortunately, Jordan did not count on Sinestro’s backup plan.
Sinestro has tapped the Red Power of Rage
When Hal Jordan confronts him, Sinestro admits that his goal had been to inspire enough fear to recharge his ring so he could leave Earth. Jordan is less than sympathetic, saying he isn’t sorry to have disappointed Sinestro. The former Green Lantern denies that he is disappointed. Indeed, he thanks Hal for the gift he had given him. For the anger Sinestro felt at Hal Jordan stopping him yet again enables him tap into the Red Power of Rage.
Each color of the Emotional Spectrum offers different powers and weaknesses. In the case of the Red Power, wielders are granted increased offensive abilities at the cost of their self-control. Some Red Lanterns had the ability to control their anger constructively, and could make constructs of red light similar to those of a Green Lantern. It remains to be seen if Sinestro will be such a wielder, or if he will driven berserk by his hatred of Hal Jordan.
