Marvel Comics has announced “Marvel ’97” — new collection of variant covers honoring what the publisher calls its “most explosive decade.”
The Marvel ’97 Variant Covers celebrate the upcoming release of Marvel Studios‘ Disney+ series X-Men ’97 — a continuation of the fan-favorite X-Men: The Animated Series. No fewer than 23 of these ’90s-themed covers will adorn Marvel‘s various titles throughout the month of February 2024. They promise to “capture the essence of this blockbuster era by depicting your favorite heroes in their iconic ’90s looks, reuniting ’90s lineups, and paying homage to memorable ’90s covers.”
At this time, the publisher has revealed the first 20 Marvel ’97 variants — which come from such acclaimed artists as Ron Lim, Doaly, Leinil Francis Yu, Annie Wu, Phil Noto, Dan Jurgens, and many more.

Marvel Studios returns to the 1990s in X-Men ’97
X-Men: The Animated Series originally aired on Fox Kids for five seasons from 1992 to 1997. In late 2021, Marvel Studios announced X-Men ’97, a direct follow-up that would stream exclusively on Disney+. The revival series brings back numerous voice actors from the original — including Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, and Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm.
X-Men ’97 premieres sometime early next year — likely around the same time the Marvel ’97 Variant Covers hit comic shops. The animated series’ first season will consist of 10 episodes. A second season is also in the works.
Marvel Studios’ X-Men ’97 premieres in 2024 on Disney+.
