Image Comics’ Ghost Machine Collective Adds Blackest Night Artist Ivan Reis

Acclaimed DC artist Ivan Reis (Blackest Night, Aquaman) has officially become the 10th creator to join Image ComicsGhost Machine collective.

São Paulo native Reis took the stage at CCXP alongside frequent collaborator and Ghost Machine co-founder Geoff Johns. Reis will re-team with Johns on a new series called Hyde Street, which will kick off Ghost Machine’s horror universe and “introduce strange and bizarre characters like Mr. X-Ray.” Hyde Street will debut in January’s Ghost Machine #1 ahead of its proper launch later in 2024.

Image describes Hyde Street as combining “Blackest Night’s fantastic scope with Twilight Zone’s thought-provoking drama.” The publisher promises that the horror series will “continue Reis and Johns’ tradition of epic, character-centered stories with rich and sprawling mythologies surrounding them.” In the meantime, Reis has crafted special Hyde Street variant covers for the aforementioned Ghost Machine #1, which will introduce readers to all the new imprint has to offer.

“Continuing our goal to have the most beautiful books on the stands, we at Ghost Machine are proud, privileged and honored to welcome modern-day master, Ivan Reis, to the family,” Ghost Machine’s founders said in a statement. “Ivan was at the top of our list for the next creator to join us and we could not be more excited to have him as the newest creator and co-owner.”

What is Ghost Machine?

Ghost Machine launched earlier this year as a “first-of-its-kind creator-owned and operated media company” publishing its works through Image. In addition to Johns and newcomer Reis, the imprint’s lineup of creators includes Jason FabokGary FrankBryan Hitch, Lamont Magee, Francis Manapul, Brad Meltzer, Peter J. Tomasi, and Maytal Zchut.

Ghost Machine’s “forward-thinking business model” allows these creators to “jointly own, run and operate the company and together share in publishing, media, merchandising and beyond.” Back in October, the company announced “four shared universes of character-centered titles” — The Unnamed, Rook: Exodus, Family Odysseys, and the aforementioned Hyde Street (which was untitled at the time). Check out the full details for those below:

  • The Unnamed, revealing a mysterious group of genre heroes from across history, featuring characters and titles like Geiger, Junkyard Joe, Redcoat, and First Ghost. A Geiger series, based on Johns and Frank’s hit comic of the same name, is already in development at Paramount TV with director Justin Simien.
  • Rook: Exodus, a sprawling sci-fi epic which takes place in the far future, on a world where every aspect of nature is controlled by technology.
  • The universe of family odysseys centering around the time displaced family, The Rocketfellers, and their friends.
  • Hyde Street, an epic horror universe and the name of one of Ghost Machine’s lead series written by Johns and illustrated by Ivan Reis.

The 64-page Ghost Machine #1 goes on sale January 24, 2024 from Image Comics. Ghost Machine’s main titles will then begin shipping in April 2024.
