Derek Kirk Kim Combines Mermaids and Dune in New Image Comics Series

Image Comics has announced The Last Mermaid, a new ongoing sci-fi series from award-winning creator Derek Kirk Kim.

Set to launch in March, The Last Mermaid marks writer/artist Kim’s first comic book work in 10 years. Image calls the post-apocalyptic series a “literal fish-out-of-water story” that is “perhaps best described as ‘mermaids meets Dune.'” The publisher says the book will also appeal to “fans of lush, animation-style artwork like that of Isola, Low, and classic Miyazaki.”

What is The Last Mermaid about?

“In The Last Mermaid, a lone mermaid roams an endless wasteland on a quest beyond reason,” an official synopsis reads. “To press ever onward, she must survive the interminable stretches between tiny pockets of water, roaming bands of cybernetic cannibals, and fearsome mutant beasts. What propels her forward to take such a risk?”

“I’m so excited to be back making comics after a decade of experience in TV and animation,” Kim said in a press release. “The Last Mermaid is a culmination of everything I’ve learned and love in storytelling, and I couldn’t be prouder to present it through Image Comics. Returning to comics feels like coming home and I hope everyone will join the titular mermaid on her epic quest to find her own home in The Last Mermaid.”

Kim rose to prominence in 2003 thanks to his acclaimed graphic novel Same Difference and Other Stories. He went on to work on a number of popular animated series — including Disney Channel’s Amphibia, Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, and Netflix’s Green Eggs and Ham.

Fellow comic book creator Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Superman Smashes the Klan) took the time to praise Kim’s return to the medium. “The Last Mermaid is an absolute treasure,” Yang said. “Derek Kirk Kim creates a world you’ll want to get lost in. Epic. Heart-breaking. Utterly gorgeous. You’ll love every panel of this sprawling saga.”

The Last Mermaid #1 goes on sale March 6, 2024 from Image Comics. Kim will be on hand to promote the comic at Emerald City Comic Con.
