ThunderCats #1 Has Over 100K Pre-Sales

The upcoming ThunderCats comic from Dynamite Entertainment is one of the most highly anticipated comics of 2024. Dynamite confirmed this with their announcement that the first issue has over 100,000 copies ordered ahead of the Final Order Cutoff (FOC) date. That is an impressive premiere for the first comic born of a licensing partnership between Warner Bros. and Dynamite.

“It’s incredibly rewarding that the fans and retailers have supported this so well,” said Dynamite CEO Nick Barrucci. He also noted how unusual it is for a comic to sell so well at the start of the year: “January and February have not had as many strong launches, and it’s why in our optimism that this series would do well, we launched it in February instead of pushing it to the late sprint/early summer.”

ThunderCats Variant Covers Are on the Loose

The new ThunderCats comic is a reboot of the original 1985 animated series. The comic will open, as the cartoon did, with the feline Thundarians fleeing the doomed planet Thundera. Stranded on the world called Third Earth, one group of survivors, led by the inexperienced prince Lion-O, must build a new home. They must also contend with old enemies, like the Mutants of Plun-Darr, and new threats like the sorcerer Mumm-Ra.

While based on the mythology of the original cartoon, Barrucci promises the new series will be accessible to newcomers. “Writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and the rest of the creative team have brought together something special for both longtime and newer fans of the ThunderCats franchise,” he said. This creative team includes cover artists David NakayamaLucio ParrilloJae Lee, and Ivan Tao.
