Image Comics’ St. Mercy Goes Hollywood in 4-Part Sequel Series

This April, the world of Top Cow Productions and Image Comics‘ St. Mercy expands with a new four-issue limited series: St. Mercy: Godland.

Per Image, Top Cow has re-teamed with EP1T0ME Studios for a sequel to St. Mercy — the 2021 action-adventure series from writer John Zuur Platten, artist Atilio Rojo, and letterer Troy Peteri. St. Mercy: Godland reunites Platten, Rojo, and Peteri for a new tale that “catapults” main protagonist Mercy “from the dangers of the Incan Empire and the American West into the ruthless, golden era of 1930s Hollywood.” The debut issue features a main cover by Rojo, plus a variant cover by Lyndon White. At this time, Image has also shared four fully-lettered preview pages.

What to expect from St. Mercy: Godland

An official synopsis for the new series reads as follows: “In St. Mercy: Godland, Mercedes Oro finds herself immortal, forever tethered to the cursed ancient Incan gold, and in constant struggle with the Incan gods who deem her both a threat and an opportunity. Now, with the spirit of Toctolissica inside her, and her demon sister Quispe beside her, Mercy heads to 1930s Hollywood — a different golden age with gods of its own. Will Mercy’s newfound star power be enough to hold the past at bay, or will the power of the gods force her into the bloody center of a conflict even she can’t survive?”

“No matter where Mercy goes or what era she’s in, she can’t escape her curse,” Platten said. “In Godland, while the setting shifts from the Wild West to what was then called Hollywoodland, Mercy’s unwanted duty remains the same — protect the Incan gold, death be damned.”

“Mercy is relentless; we cannot wait for readers to reunite with her, to see our version of 1930s Hollywood, to meet the new cast from that era, and to experience the wild action scenes,” Rojo added.

“Mercy’s journey feels unique and unexpected,” EP1T0ME creative director Lee Thomas said. “[It] reminds us of the eclectic journeys of Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark or Quantum Leap’s Sam Beckett.”

What happened in the original St. Mercy?

Like the upcoming Godland, Platten and Rojo’s original St. Mercy was a four-part limited series. Image published the book from August 2021 to November 2021. It subsequently put out a trade paperback edition in February 2022.

“When Mercedes Oro, a young missionary on the outskirts of a small frontier town, takes in and cares for a dying outlaw, the outlaw’s gang repays her by attacking her mission, killing her family, stealing the golden artifacts she swore to protect, and leaving her for dead with a dagger through her heart,” a synopsis reads. “Unbeknownst to the gang, the cursed dagger resurrects Mercedes, and she is reborn as St. Mercy, an avenging angel of death. Now, she’s out to recover her gold and deal violent retribution to those who wronged her, all while confronting Toctollissica, the spirit in the cursed Incan artifact that’s keeping her amongst the living.”

St. Mercy: Godland #1 goes on sale Wednesday, April 10 from Image Comics.
