Deadpool’s Rob Liefeld Retiring From Marvel Character, Speaks About Deadpool 3

Rob Liefeld is stepping away from Deadpool.

Liefeld, who co-created the character of Deadpool with Fabian Nicieza, announced in an Instagram post on February 5 that he was retiring from the character after one final story that’s releasing in summer 2024.

Liefeld told The Hollywood Reporter, “About 10 years ago, I really felt like I was in a groove, and in my mind, I was going to do this till I was 70. But the eyes and the hands, and the aches and the pains — they have a different timetable, I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older. The last year’s worth of work was the hardest to produce.”

He added, “I can’t continue to grind like this, so why not make the last grind something memorable? It’s just a function of, the eyes and the hands have to cooperate with your ambitions, and I can sense that this is getting harder and harder. Why not just put my own guardrails up and deliver it on my terms?”

What did Rob Liefeld say about Deadpool 3?

Liefeld discussed Marvel Studio’s upcoming Deadpool 3 movie. Having visited the set last summer, Liefeld said, “I saw some crazy shit, and none of that has made its way out. I was really excited by what I was seeing. Fans want Deadpool 3 to represent a turning point for Marvel. I’m really hoping that this takes Marvel into new heights and puts them on a new direction. I’m as excited as everybody else.”

Liefeld has worked on numerous Deadpool comics since the character debuted in 1990. Prior to his new Deadpool project, which Liefeld says “would be an expensive story to adapt,” he worked on a five-issue miniseries titled Deadpool: Badder Blood that was published in 2023.

“I often wonder what my life would be like if I had not created and sold not just Deadpool, but Cable, Domino, Stryfe and many others to Marvel,” Liefeld said in his Instagram post. What If young Rob hadn’t taken up the challenge of transforming a title that was headed towards cancellation is one of the better alternate universe tales. It certainly transformed my young career, creating opportunities and record breaking sales for New Mutants & X-Force. Creating and introducing the Deadpool Corps., featuring Lady Deadpool & Dogpool was a great function of my mid-life crisis during 2009.”

Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to release on July 26, 2024, from Marvel Studios.
