John Stewart has a more impressive record than most members of the Green Lantern Corps. Beyond serving with distinction as a Green Lantern, he briefly possessed the power of a Guardian of the Universe. He also served as the field leader of the Darkstars, a rival peacekeeping force of the Green Lanterns. However, one recent feat has proven John Stewart to be the ultimate Green Lantern.
Green Lantern: War Journal #6 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Montos continues the saga of John Stewart’s battle with the Radiant Dead. Born of a parallel universe, the Radiant Dead combines the worst aspects of classic zombies and Green Lanterns. Beyond enslaving those they kill in undead forms, the Radiant Dead also feeds upon the Green Light of Will. This enabled them to kill almost all the Green Lanterns of their home reality.
The Radiant Dead came to Earth-Prime, chasing after the Green Lantern Caolán Shepherd. He was sent to Earth-Prime by the John Stewart of his reality, who had evolved into a god-like being called The Builder. It was the Builder’s belief that only the Prime John Stewart could defeat the Radiant Dead’s leader, the Revenant Queen. Thankfully, he was proven right.
John Stewart Transforms Himself Into Pure Will
Tending a mortally wounded Shepherd and watching the advancing hordes of Radiant Dead, John Stewart became inspired. The process that created the Radiant Dead slowly turned them from walking corpses into profane constructs of dark light. This prompted Stewart to consider what might happen if he used his powers to transform himself into Green Will light rather than creating constructs.
Stewart theorized that the light of will was “too bright and strong to be corrupted.” This was why the Radiant Dead sought to consume Will energy rather than overpower it. Once transformed, Stewart proved to be invincible, easily finding the energy to repel the Radiant Dead and restore the dying Shepherd.
