Marvel Celebrates Spider-Man Black Suit 40th Anniversary With Anthology

It was a major event in 1984 when Spider-Man changed his costume in Secret Wars. While the famous Black Suit ultimately evolved into the symbiote Venom, it has remained an enduring part of comic book history. Now, Marvel Comics is honoring that history with a new anthology series, Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood.

Part of the Marvel Black, White & Blood imprint, the new book will be aimed at older readers. Every story will involve the classic black costume in some way. Some will be set in the days before Peter learned the truth behind the symbiote. Some will be set in the modern day.

The finished artwork will be rendered in black, white, and red. Each issue will feature several stories centered around Peter Parker by an all-star team of creators. The first issue will also feature variant covers by Greg Land, Ron Frenz, and Skottie Young.

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood Creators Revealed

The first issue of Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood will feature three stories. The first tale will be scripted by legendary writer J.M. DeMatteis, with art by Elena Casagrande. Based on DeMatteis’ Kraven’s Last Hunt, the unforgiving story will shed new light on an iconic scene.

The second story finds Peter Parker coping with a vestige of the symbiote that stayed dormant for years, waiting to attack when his guard was down. This story will be scripted by J. Michael Straczynski. The art will be provided by artist Sumit Kumar in their Marvel Comics debut. Finally, Dustin Nguyen will write and draw a spine-tingling story about Spider-Man being hunted by an unseen enemy.

Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood #1 (of 4) arrives in comic shops everywhere on August 7, 2024.
